COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM ON SUGARCANE

PARC, Islamabad has been sponsoring this program since 1982. The major aim of this program is to evaluate the approved sugarcane varieties of Punjab, Sindh and NWFP for yield and other agronomic characters under the prevailing climatic conditions at the following Sugarcane Research Organizations.

  1. NSCRI, Thatta, Sugarcane Section, ARI/NIA, Tandojam, Quid-e-Awam ARI, Larkana and Dewan Farooq, SRI, Thatta in Sindh.
  2. SCRI, Faisalabad and Shakarganj, SRI, Jhang in Punjab and
  3. SCRI, Mardan,  SBS, Dargai, and ARI, D.I. Khan in NWFP.

Sugarcane Breeding Station at Jabban, Dargai

Dargai area of Malakand Agency is situated just at the bottom of Malakand Pass. It has characteristically low frost occurrence and SBS Jabbanhence suited for natural flowering of sugarcane. A breeding station was started with the efforts of scientists at SCRI, Mardan, and the financial assistance of Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) in which work on sugarcane breeding started. At present efforts are underway to cross different varieties/species of sugarcane to incorporate frost tolerance and other characters to the existing sugarcane commercial varieties.
